As a highschool student, Thiagi was a physical klutz who ended up being the goalpost during soccer games. To compensate for this, he organized teams of nonplayers to demand alternate recreational activities. Later, as a highschool teacher, Thiagi organized his colleagues to conduct protest marches and his students to conduct science fairs.
Ever since his youthful teambuilding days, Thiagi has understood the importance of facilitating people's involvement and applied his field-based principles to a variety of situations. He increased his knowledge and skills by formal study of the psychology of small groups at Indiana University. By observing and analyzing the performance of several expert facilitators over a decade, Thiagi evolved his balancing-act model for conducting small-group activities.
