Thiagi's expertise with human performance technology
In his first major instructional design project in India, Thiagi
discovered that traditional training was not a sufficient solution.
The project was aimed at spreading the use of birth control
techniques. Thiagi came up with alternative strategies including the
first non-textual job aid which used illustrations to improve
contraceptive performance of villagers. Later, as a high school
teacher in Madras, he successfully increased grades on math tests by
providing breakfast to the students who came from poor households in
the local slum.
Long before human performance technology became a field, Thiagi
was a practitioner. For the past 30 years, he has been a pioneer in
this multidisciplinary field, learning from and often working with
its conceptual leaders. The premier HPT professional association in
the world, the International Society for Performance Improvement
(ISPI), has given Thiagi almost every honor it awards, including the
most prestigious Honorary Life Member Award. He was a long-time
former editor of P&I, the ISPI journal for human
performance technology practitioners.
